MacIntyre is an award-winning UK provider of support services to people with learning disabilities. As part of this charity, our expanding No Limits division provides education programmes to children (aged between 11 – 19 year olds) for whom more traditional learning environments may not have worked. We provide personalised education plans in the community for young people with learning disabilities and/or autism, and currently have vacancies in the south Buckinghamshire area (Amersham and High Wycombe).
Because our Teaching Assistants work mostly out in the community rather than in a classroom setting, your job title would be Community Learning Facilitator (CLF). Your key task will be to deliver the education programmes to the learner. You will support the young person to work towards their education targets and your day might involve helping them learn how to use public transport, or take part in or watch sporting activities. You will support the young person to learn practical life skills, and support some people to attend work experience or college.
Because of the complexity of their learning disabilities the young people are almost always supported 1-1 and therefore the work will involve within a School or Community based provision. Some young people require support with intimate care or medication and they may, if feeling particularly anxious, show behaviours of concern. Full training in all these areas will be given.
You will be working 42 weeks per year, alongside a school calendar, and the above salary range is the actual pro-rated amount for the role when working 38 hours per week.
The work is both challenging and inspiring: you are ultimately preparing the young person for transition into a post-16 (College) placement and then further into their adult lives. We will provide you with an extensive and ongoing training programme and dedicated local support from your Team Coordinator.
Perhaps you’ve worked in special education, as a Learning Support Assistant or Teaching Assistant. Perhaps you've been a Support Worker or Practitioner in the social care sector. For us, an underlying ability and attitude are just as important as background and experience. If you have not worked in the field of education before then please don’t be put off. We can provide all the specialist training you need, but we can't train you to be kind, to have initiative, to be friendly and patient, and those are essential qualities for this work.
You will need English and Maths at Level 2 (GCSE’s at C or Functional Skills level 2), and you will be required to complete weekly reporting in line with a school based curriculum.
You will need to hold a licence which allows you to drive in the UK, together with your own transport with business insurance as you may be transporting learners. Reasonable mileage is reimbursed as part of your expenses.
We also have Relief positions available if maybe you were interested in a part-time job without fixed contracted hours. Relief means you would be covering sickness and annual leave of other members of staff. Please state Relief on your application if this is the position you would like to apply for.
