GASTROENTEROLOGY CONSULTANT – INTESTINAL FAILURE AND CLINICAL NUTRITION

Due to vast investment Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital are expanding out Gastroenterology department and as such we are looking to recruit a Consultant who has a particular interest in Intestinal Failure and Clinical Nutrition to join us at this really exciting time.

This role does not include any Acute Medicine cover.

This post has arisen a result of significant expansion of our inpatient and outpatient clinical nutrition and intestinal failure service and a growing need to increase our upper and lower GI endoscopic provision in alignment with the opening of our brand-new state of the art 10 room endoscopy unit in the Quadram Institute. In addition we are keen to increase our already well established academic profile and support the wider Sustainability and Transformation Partnership.

Why Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital?

Norwich, is home to our beautiful, purpose built hospital which is the 6th largest Acute Trust in the UK. Located on the same site as Norwich Research Park and next to world renowned University of East Anglia (UEA), we are a teaching hospital with a strong focus around career development and research. In addition to this Gastroenterology has benefited from a huge investment with the construction of the state of the art Quadram Institute on site at NNUH. We can now carry out 40,000 procedures each year making NNUH home to the largest Endoscopy Unit in Europe

The Quadram Institute which opened in December 2018 has also created new interfaces between food science, gut biology, human health and disease, capitalising on the world-class bioscience cluster based at the Norwich Research Park. NNUH clinicians work alongside scientists to conduct research to improve human health and wellbeing throughout life.

To find out more visit the Quadram Institute website available via the links section on this job.

NNUH is also a centre for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programmes and we are also a centre of excellence for endoscopy training, offering approved courses for doctors and nurses.

We are fully JAG (Joint Advisory Group) accredited and at our last assessment the endoscopy team was congratulated for facilitating high quality patient care across all disciplines.

What can a career as a Gastroenterology Consultant at NNUH look like?

Due to this expansion we are taking a creative approach to our recruitment and are looking to tailor roles to the individual. As a large and growing department we have the luxury to accommodate and support a range of sub specialities and would be interested in applicants who are looking to develop their own sub specialist’s interests whether that be clinical, endoscopic, nutrition, physiology, research or a combination of the above.

This gives you the opportunity to move your career in the direction you want it to take. Supported by large team of Consultants and a team of Junior Doctors and Nurse Specialist, especially our nutrition specialist nurses, you will be supported to achieve your career goals. We operate a flexible working policy and are equally interested in those wanting full or part time hours or even someone looking for a post retirement post.

Why Norwich?

In Norwich a staggering 77% of people say they love their job. Less than 2 hours from London (yet a world away in terms of house prices and cost of living) and serviced by excellent transport links, Norwich is one of few UK cities that still retain a strong local identity and with that a strong sense of community – people walk down the street and say hello to each other, baristas remember our coffee order, you get to know about interesting local projects.

This strong sense of self along with excellent shopping, eating out, affordable house prices and excellent schooling is why Norwich has been ranked by the Guardian as the best city to work in.

Don’t take our word for it – Gastroenterology Service Director, Alastair Watson chose to accept at Role at NNUH after experiencing Norwich hospitality first hand.

“I knew very little about Norwich before I applied for the post. At my first visit I was put up in a good hotel and was impressed the friendly atmosphere. The quality of life in Norwich is very high. House prices are very reasonable. One can live within walking distance of the city centre without breaking the bank. Similarly, one can live in countryside with only short commute to the hospital either by car or bike. Norwich as a city ticks a lot of boxes. It has excellent schools. Crime is low and one feels safe walking around. The historical aspects of Norwich remain very obvious with its city walls, medieval street plan and a Norman cathedral. Sport is good with a premiership football team. There is a vibrant arts scene with an annual festival and both professional and amateur theatre and music. In short, Norwich is one of Britain’s best kept secrets.”
