We are the largest provider of NHS services across the County of Cumbria. Around 3500 staff operate 60 community and mental health services from over 20 main sites and many other premises shared with other health or community services such as GP surgeries. In any one year we see around one fifth of the population providing health care services to people in Cumbria, from newborn babies to care of the frail and elderly. Our services are organised into care groups, designed to put clinicians in control of decision making with patients and carers so that services are run by experts in the clinical area.
Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust was established in 2007 and provides an integrated Community and Mental Health service to the entire county, a population of around half a million. Approximately 100,000 are aged over 65 of which two thirds live in the North and one third in the South of the county. We are seeking a Consultant with old age psychiatry experience to fill a vacancy created through retirement. Your base will be in South Cumbria at Furness General Hospital in Barrow, where in-patient dementia services are located. You will be working alongside two other consultants and an Associate Specialist, together covering the Furness and South Lakes areas, which includes a significant part of the Lake District National Park with World Heritage Centre status.
Cumbria is an excellent place to live with stunning scenery and a fantastic quality of life, particularly for those who love the outdoors. Whether you prefer living in towns and cities, or small villages and hamlets, with views of hills and lakes, Cumbria will have a place for you. Average house prices are amongst the lowest in the UK, making it an affordable place to live. Schools are also highly rated by Ofsted with a mix of state and private sector provisions.
Cumbria Partnership was restructured in 2014 into its current ‘Care Groups’. These four groups include Children’s, Community, Specialist and Mental Health services. Although these are separately managed, there has been an emerging culture of synergistic, cross boundary working between all services. It has also allowed for significantly improved clinical governance across the Trust. There is an active educational program and we teach medical students on placement from Lancaster. We have an enthusiastic research department with several Consultants now principal investigators in the Trust.
The service is very forward thinking. We constantly strive to improve patient and staff experience. Developments have included the nationally awarded Care Home Education and Support Service (CHESS), progress towards a nurse led dementia in-patient unit and ‘virtual clinics’ for dementia diagnosis which are recognised by NHS Northern England clinical networks and referenced as good practice by them. Job plans are regularly reviewed as a team allowing doctors the opportunity to change roles, whether these include clinical, academic, managerial or other activities. This allows everyone’s job to remain interesting, do-able and equitable, avoid burn-out and foster career development.
