Job Description

Join an Award Winning games company! You will work with the Creative Director to help run the design department, part of which is reviewing, maintaining and implementing departmental processes

The ideal candidate for us will be an experienced games designer, with some experience of either leading or managing a team. You will need to be interested in keeping abreast of the usage of current tools and trends in game development and continuing to learn new skills.

We'd need you to be able to effectively organise, guide, support and motivate a team to produce a consistently high quality of design related work. You must have a strong knowledge of and interest in the history of games, the current state of the games market and games development practices.

Most importantly you should still be excited by and interested in actively playing games!

A Design Manager at Team17 must be able to judge games objectively from critical and commercial perspectives and offer targeted and useful feedback to developers. Be a strong and clear communicator, be able to work with people, be approachable, and must take a practical approach to management.

Some responsibilities are covered below:

The overall management of the staff within the Design Department, including but not limited to: recruitment, setting standards of performance, carrying out performance reviews, carrying out wage reviews, setting the agenda for training and mediating where necessary in any disciplinary issues
The overall quality of output of Team17’s internally developed games from game design, UI/UX design and general gameplay points of view
Assisting third party developers signed to the Team17 Games Label from game design, UI/UX design and general gameplay points of view
Working with designers individually to oversee their work, and advise, guide, and mentor them in their day to day roles
Keeping up to date with modern game design and development practices, in order to help guide the designers, give the appropriate structure to the department, and implement useful processes
Working with the other department heads (Production, Art, Programming, Audio and QA) to ensure that Team17’s games are delivered on time in full
Working with the commercial team to ensure Team17’s games meet any criteria they have specified to help maximise sales performance

Ideal experience / attributes required:

Line management and leadership
An established Games Designer
Excellent written, communication and presentational skills
Experience of and a willingness to speak in front of an audience / groups
The ability to work with people and accept feedback and criticism
The ability to deliver feedback and communicate objective criticism
Systematic and strategic thinking
Imagination and creativity
An energetic and flexible approach
Practical knowledge of current development practices and development tools
Enthusiasm for learning new creative techniques and technology
Practical working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and third-party game engines (e.g. Unity and/or Unreal)
The ability to set agendas for staff training, set performance targets and appraise staff performance
