Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to work in an innovative environment and complement our primary care team situated in East Cornwall.  You will be working in conjunction with skilled and experienced HCA’s, Practice Nurse and Local Diabetic & Respiratory Nurse Specialists, supported by our GP Lead in Diabetes and COPD.

Quay Lane Surgery are looking for an experienced Respiratory & Diabetes Nurse with strong clinical skills who is passionate about providing high quality care and is able to work autonomously. 

Main duties of the job

The role involves:

  • managing Diabetes care and its complications;
  • Insulin initiation;
  • managing COPD care and its complications;
  • act as an advisory role to patients and doctors;
  • to prevent avoidable admissions to hospital;
  • reduce referrals into the traditional diabetes/respiratory outpatient services;

We already achieve the highest targets for QOF which you will be expected to continue.

Essential requirements:

  • Proven track record and experience in managing patients with Diabetes and COPD
  • Strong interpersonal communication and active listening skills
  • Experience with computerised patients management systems

About us 

We are a rural dispensing EMIS Web surgery based in East Cornwall with a list size of approx. 4500 patients. Our main surgery is based in St. Germans and we have a branch at Downderry.

The role that we are looking to fill will compliment our current clinical team.  We will provide you with:

Person Specification

qualifications Essential

  • Registered General Nurse Evidence of further training or willingness to undertake Excellent communication skills


  • Demonstrable commitment to professional development Knowledge of current issues pertinent to Practice Nursing

experience Essential

  • Experience of working in accordance with the UKCC Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice Experience with Diabetes and Respiratory Management


  • Previous General Practice Experience

Personal Attributes Essential

  • Approachable and motivated Flexible and efficient Committed to team working Able to cope with pressure from patients and doctors Maintain confidentiality at all times Ability to work without direct supervision Ability to use own judgement, resourcefulness and common sense


  • Ability to cope with distressing information Basic IT skills
