Investment management solicitor 3 to 5 years' PQE

Macfarlanes London, Greater London Full Time

The investment management practice is looking to recruit an alternative funds solicitor with three to five years’ PQE to join its successful team.

About Macfarlanes

We are an independent London-based law firm with a high profile client base from around the world. We are known for the quality of our work, both in terms of our ability to handle the full range of corporate and commercial matters, and the fact that we can advise our clients on their private affairs. We handle work of the highest quality and complexity on a wide range of matters.

Our size and partner-led approach enable us to give our clients a more personal service underpinned by the highest standards of commitment and care.

As well as that, our independence allows us to choose precisely the right lawyer or firm for our clients' needs in any jurisdiction in the world.

What this means for you

Offering a partner-led service enables our fee earners to learn and develop through working closely with a senior member of the team. Our size means that you will often be very close to the front line or in a client facing role, gaining a greater insight into the issues facing our clients.

We expect all our fee earners to assume real responsibility, as well as to participate in client and business development activities. That means wider exposure for you and a steep learning curve.

Our matters often have a cross-border element, so our fee earners frequently liaise with global businesses and specialists in overseas jurisdictions.

The importance we place on the development of our fee earners’ legal and commercial skills has allowed us to develop the excellent reputation we have – we believe our education and training programme is second to none.

We all work together as part of a cohesive and supportive team, with the firm recognising, appreciating and rewarding the efforts of its employees.

Practice overview

Our investment management practice consists of five partners, 16 solicitors, 5 trainee solicitors, eight paralegals and one professional support lawyer. We are one of the broadest based investment management practices in London. Our work covers the entire spectrum of investment management work from private equity, private debt, venture capital, infrastructure, real estate and hedge funds through to regulated funds (including UCITS). Our major areas of focus at the moment are on private equity managers, private debt, institutional asset managers and VC managers. We are also doing a lot of interesting work on hybrid funds (blending closed-ended funds with open-ended funds) and for alternatives managers looking to attract capital from DC pension funds and the mass-affluent.

The team advises fund managers, other service providers and investors on a range of matters relating to their work and ongoing strategic issues. Many of our clients' projects bring together a number of disciplines; we frequently draw on the expertise of our tax colleagues, as well as derivatives and trading, corporate, and regulatory lawyers to provide a seamless service, however complex the work.

International issues are commonplace in what we do. Whether we are advising in relation to the formation of a fund or seed deal arrangements, our independent status ensures that we are able to instruct the very best local counsel. As a result, clients benefit from the highest quality advice suited to their needs and the specific matter in hand.

Our client base

We act for many of the leading institutional asset managers across private equity, private debt, real estate and other alternative asset classes and advise on all aspects of their business. Some of our key clients include; Hayfin Capital Management, Legal & General, Aberdeen Standard, Alcentra, Old Mutual, Alchemy, Goldman Sachs and 17Capital. Our advice does not end with the launch of the fund, we develop long-term relationships advising on corporate, regulatory and trading matters on a daily basis.

  • acting as lead associate on alternatives fundraisings;
  • advising on incentive arrangements;
  • potentially advising on the funds aspects of wider alternatives asset management transactions and secondaries; and
