Legal Counsel at Secret Escapes

Legal Counsel

Secret Escapes London, Greater London Full Time

We’re looking for a lawyer to join our Legal team and be responsible for our legal affairs in Germany, as well as supporting on business-wide projects. If you’re qualified in German law and want to take on a big role in a small, dynamic team then this is for you!

About Secret Escapes

Secret Escapes is the world’s leading members-only online travel deal company, offering inspiring travel experiences and hand-picked offers to over 75 million users worldwide across our family of brands.

Operating in 21 countries across Europe and Asia, Secret Escapes Group continues to grow and establish itself as a world-class business, dedicated to giving our members the best range and value in luxury travel deals at low prices.

Founded in 2011, and following a number of acquisitions, we’ve doubled in size over the last 3 years and have a social-media following the size of a small country. We’re a diverse and inclusive bunch of individuals from different backgrounds and with varied interests, but the one thing we all have in common is that we’re good people (even if we do say so ourselves!)

Problems we are trying to solve

As Secret Escapes has grown, with staff, operations and consumer markets in most of Europe, complexity has increased. At the same time we face constant challenges from new regulations across the globe, all of which is handled by a small team of lawyers. Germany is our largest market, and alongside Scandinavia and Benelux forms part of a key strategic region for our business.

We need someone to join the Legal team (reporting into our Head of Legal) to act as the main point of contact in the team for Germany and the wider region. The role will involve giving fast, pragmatic advice on a wide variety of legal matters, and to ensure we are on top of our legal house-keeping. You’ll be our first lawyer in Germany and work closely with the rest of the legal team in London.

Things you’ll be working on:

This is a broad role which would best suit someone looking for a generalist role who is keen to advise on any and all legal aspects affecting the business. Amongst other things you will:

  • Advise the German management team on legal issues affecting the business;
  • Review and negotiate a variety of commercial contracts for the region;
  • Manage any supplier or customer disputes including, where necessary, managing external lawyers;
  • Taking a lead for data protection compliance, and working as part of a group-wide team to manage this;
  • Work as part of company-wide teams to advise on regulations impacting new business projects or initiatives (typically consumer, travel and data protection);
  • Act as the first port of call for legal queries for the region, and manage external lawyers where specialist advice or additional capacity is required
  • How the magic happens

    We are a team of two lawyers and one risk analyst who sit in the London office, and report to the CEO. We work closely with our Berlin team, where you’ll find colleagues with significant experience managing legal issues locally.

    We have to help the business with a huge range of different issues and work fast to give practical advice. We try to work smart, so we’re happy accepting what’s ‘good’ instead of waiting for something that’s ‘perfect’. We also adopt an increasingly data-driven approach to managing the legal function and are constantly challenging our way of working to be as efficient as possible with our small team.

    The deal breakers:

  • Qualified lawyer in Germany;
  • At least several years experience at either a law firm or in-house legal team - bonus points for any time spent with tech / e-commerce or venture capital-backed businesses;
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Travel law regulations;
  • General commercial contracts;
  • Data protection;
  • Corporate;
  • Litigation management;
  • Intellectual property;
  • Excellent written and spoken German and English;
  • And you are…

  • Excited by the opportunity to join a high-growth, fast-paced business;
  • Happy working autonomously with little supervision (but don’t worry - we use a lot of Google Hangouts so you’ll still get to see our faces all the time);
  • Super organised and able to prioritise and manage your own workload;
  • Willing and able to learn new skills and areas of law;
  • A real people person - you’ll need to work alongside a lot of different teams across different countries, and build great relationships to maintain the effectiveness of our team;
  • Enthusiastic about joining a small, high-performing team and not afraid to take on tasks and challenges you’ve not experienced before; and
  • Willing to undertake occasional travel to other SE offices.
  • Things you should know

    There is a conflict at the heart of our team between a passion for fitness and the outdoors, and a love of food. Between us we’ve competed in mountain marathons, cycled from London to Paris & Bruges and swum at national level, but also love a team brunch and the regular sweet treats that appear in the office. Our wider team also includes several yoga instructors, so flexibility is essential!

    We are an equal opportunity employer:

    Diversity and inclusion are important to us at Secret Escapes and we encourage a culture where everyone can be themselves at work. We value and actively seek out a richly diverse range of talent and our policies ensure that every job application and employee is treated fairly, with equal opportunity to succeed. All applicants will be considered for employment without regard to any characteristic protected by law.
