Job Description

The Trust provides a range of hospital services to a local community of around 430,000 residents along with an increasing range of more specialised services provided outside this area. We also provide a range of community based services across Sunderland, South Tyneside and Gateshead, particularly within Community Nursing, Family Care and Therapy Services.

Inpatient facilities are provided from Sunderland Royal Hospital (SRH), South Tyneside District Hospital (STDH), St Benedict’s Hospice and from the specialist Sunderland Eye Infirmary, giving a total number of beds of around 1200 acute beds, as well as a state-of-the-art ICCU at SRH. The Trust is continuing to invest in its infrastructure with: a new Emergency Department and Integrated Assessment Unit opened June 2017 at SRH; a state of the art Integrated Emergency Care Centre at STDH opened in 2012; in 2016 the Trust opened its new Endoscopy Unit at SRH; in 2017 the Trust opened its state of the art Surgical Centre at STDH in 2017; in 2017 the Trust opened its new state of the art MRI at STDH; in 2017 the Trust opened its state of the art Durham Treatment Centre providing satellite dialysis, out-patient clinics, imaging and day case procedures across a range of specialties. The Trust also provides an outreach service to our Durham patients for nephrology, urology, ENT, OMFS and ophthalmology. There is an onsite at SRH Fitness Centre and access to a Childcare Co-ordinator to help staff with their childcare arrangements.

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Trust Registrar (Specialty Doctor) in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery, to commence on the 5th of August 2019 for a fixed-term period of 12 months(with a possible extension).Previous experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics is essential. This post will be based entirely at South Tyneside Hospital.

This is a modern district general hospital in the seaside town of South Shields. The nearest cities are Newcastle upon Tyne (10 miles away) and Sunderland (7 miles away). The hospital is a designated Trauma Unit on the North-East Trauma Network.

The department is on a single site hospital. The department has a team of 6 x Consultants, 2 x Orthopaedic Specialty Doctors, 2 x Trust Registrars,2 x Research Registrars, 2 x SHO’s, 1 x Surgical Rotation doctor,1 x Clinical Research Fellow, 1 x FY2 doctor and 2 x FY1 doctors.

We perform a comprehensive range of trauma and elective upper limb and lower limb surgery in the department including routine and complex shoulder, elbow and hand surgery as well as hip, knee and foot and ankle surgery which provides a variety of training opportunities. We have successfully supervised previous registrars in passing the FRCS (Tr & Orth) exam. Extensive clinical training and experience will be gained.

There are daily Trauma meetings in which patients admitted in the previous 24 hours are discussed. There are monthly morbidity and mortality / clinical governance meetings during which participation is expected from the successful candidate. There will be opportunities to undertake audit and research in the department and is actively encouraged. The successful candidate will also be allocated an educational supervisor who will also provide career advice and support for onward career progression. Participation in the departmental junior doctor teaching programme is expected. The department is actively involved in teaching medical students from Newcastle University.

Job Plan = 10 pa sessions. On-Call Rota 1:5
