Underwriting at Marshmallow

Since becoming a full insurer in early 2021, Marshmallow has had full control over our underwriting and we have grown a small, dedicated underwriting team, responsible for keeping the business we write within our risk tolerance. We’re scaling fast and now looking to expand our personal lines offerings to help us serve more and more customers with our affordable, fair insurance. Our underwriting team works closely with many other teams across the business - Pricing, Fraud, Customer Operations and Compliance to name a few.

Role Description

This is a really exciting opportunity to lead our recently-formed Underwriting team and play an instrumental part in shaping how it will grow over the next couple of years as we scale. You’ll also be part of launching the new product offerings that will help us scale. You’ll be responsible for managing the day-to-day work of the Underwriting team, including managing and coaching more junior members. You’ll also work closely with teams across the business and be the key liaison between the UK-based broker and our Gibraltar-based underwriter.

What you will achieve in your first 12 months at Marshmallow

  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the Underwriting team
  • Be the key liaison between the broker and our underwriter in Gibraltar
  • Monitor and report on performance, audit findings, underwriting leakage, general procedures and policies
  • Review and advise on our underwriting guidelines, acceptance criteria, policy wording, segment changes
  • Review and advise on our broader underwriting, claims and pricing strategies
  • Assist projects team in launching new personal lines products
  • Manage, coach and be a point of escalation for Junior Underwriters
  • Be a point of reference and escalation for Indemnity claim referrals
  • Requirements

    Who you are

  • You have an ability to balance getting stuck into the detail and also approach problems strategically
  • You are an excellent communicator - as well as mentoring and always sharing knowledge with your team, you have an ability to build and manage strong working relationships across the business
  • You enjoy coaching, developing and helping those around you to develop
  • You are able to prioritise a high volume of work to ensure we’re focussing on the biggest opportunities
  • Experiences that are essential

  • 5 years experience working in motor insurance & household insurance (preferable)
  • Extensive experience dealing with risk
  • A drive to manage, coach and develop more junior team members
  • A customer and results-focused mindset
  • Proven ability to build and manage strong working relationships across the business
  • Strong analytical skills and an ability to make decisions quickly
